He was a Specialist Physician and Endocrinologist in private practice in Somerset West since 2000. During this time, he established a large trial centre in 2002, where he successfully participated in over 80 international phase 2 and phase 3 clinical trials until the end of 2012. He was appointed National Principal Investigator for many trials and sold the trial centre to Synexus in 2013, due to illness. Earlier in his career, Dr Wellmann was a Senior Registrar in Endocrinology and Metabolism at Tygerberg Hospital from 1998 to the end of 1999.
